Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is the art which started the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) revolution and was blasted into popularity in the mid 90's when the famous Gracie family created the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in order to spread the effectivness of BJJ. Its founder Helio Gracie taught his sons his system (a modified Japanese Jiu Jitsu) and it was Royce Gracie who won the early UFCs cementing his place as a martial revolutionist and probably becoming the most famous martial artist in the world to date.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling martial art which utilises leverage in order to submit or knock out your opponent using joint attacks and choke holds. Traditionally taught in a Gi (kimono) the student learns to use the attackers own clothing and limbs to overcome a situation. The beauty of this art is that it was designed by men of small stature in order to overcome bigger stronger opponents without expending too much energy. Therefore it is perfect for men, women and children (however we do have an age limit of 14 in classes due to its nature).
BJJ does run to a coloured belt system however there are very few belts (four infact) and it takes a lot longer to progress throught the system, for exmaple a black blet takes minimum 15 years to acquire, and that is if you're lucky!
We are lucky to have Tony Bebbington coaching at TMAS Ormskirk who is a Brown Belt directly under Royce Gracie.
Kickboxing
Kickboxing is a modern combat sport which was introduced in the USA in the early 70's, it was born from full contact Karate and has now become its own art in its own right.
Our Kickboxing classes provide a fantastic workout for anyone who wishes to get fit, we utilise circuit training methods and kickboxing training to provide you with a complete workout no matter the experience.
The rulesets you will train under are Low Kick and K1 training.
Our classes work to a graded system were you can progress all the way to black belt and beyond.
Most people come to train just to get fit by doing something which keeps their interest more than slogging away in a boring gym. However if you wish to start to fighting we also have regular squad training classes for those students who wish to fight.
During a class you can expect to see circuit training, technique work, bag and pad work and sparring work.
We teach classes for kids, ladies only and mixed adults.
Lau Gar Kung Fu
Our Lau Gar Kung Fu is a traditional Southern Chinese fighting system which emphasises short range strikes with redirectional blocking and limb control in order to provide an effective self defence method. We recoginse that all martial arts however have their limitations so we introduce other skills into the classes to complement the system such as some brazilian jiu jitsu in order to give the student an awareness of how to control an attacker on the ground as well as being stood up.
Lau Gar is a graded system which progresses through a syllabus of coloured sashes, the student can expect to progress via learning various empty hand forms and smaller movements and kicks which have been taken from these forms. The syllabus has been made to show the student very simple moves and applications from the system but this is by no means the entire system merely just a snippet of how the system can be used!
You can expect fitness work, flexibility, weapons work, sparring and self defence work. We also incorporate traditional conditioning training with more modern methods!
Senshi Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
MMA training and fighting is fast becoming the worlds leading combat sport and has been made famous by the leading promoter the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). MMA combines grappling arts and striking arts together in order to be able to compete in the sport. It is seen as the ultimate proving ground in order to show a martial styles effectiveness. Our classes are taught by Chris Bentley who has been involved in martial arts for 30 years. Chris has a wealth of experience in submission fighting with his background being in Judo, he has fought for the GB squad in Judo and has been involved in coaching and fighting in MMA for many years.
Muay Thaiboxing
Muay Thai is the ancient combat art noted for its devastating knee and elbow techniques. Many kickboxing clubs will sell themselves as "Thaiboxing" but in actual fact are just kickboxing clubs who have included a few techniques from Muay Thai in order to sell themselves. At TMAS Ormskirk our Thaiboxing is the real deal! To the untrained eye kickboxing and Muay Thai may look exactly the same but in actual fact the training techniques are very different.
Pad & Circuit Training
This class is designed to provide an intense workout to complement any of the other classes which we teach at TMAS Ormskirk. We employ fantastic conditioning methods which tax the correct metabolic energy systems for combat sports with pad and bag work taken from boxing and kickboxing.
The class is great for students who currently train with us and we also welcome non martial artists to come and train too!
